As part of Singapore Art Week 2025, Art Works Gallery is delighted to present Variations on a Theme, British artist Nick Grindrod’s first solo exhibition in Asia. Blending abstract geometry with vibrant colours, Grindrod’s work creates a visual symphony that invites viewers into a world of dynamic contrasts. Through nostalgic, playful and vibrantly saturated compositions rendered in his idiosyncratic style, Grindrod pushes the boundaries of his own conceptions of form and colour, carefully teasing out the tension between scale and perspective.

Inspired by movements such as Op Art and hard-edge painting, Grindrod’s compositions juxtapose clean lines with richly textured surfaces, creating a dynamic interplay of nostalgia and modernity. His process, often likened to an archaeological excavation, layers bold colours with distressed finishes, reflecting the industrial heritage of his hometown, Sheffield. Grinrod mimics this brutalist aesthetic on the surface of his canvas through a physicality that references this urban landscape. Layers of paint are applied and then removed to reveal a subtlety distressed surface, stripped away by sponges, scalpels and sandpaper. The result is a tactile quality that alludes to the strength and vulnerability but also the pulsating energy of the city.
Grindrod’s internationally celebrated works have been showcased at venues including the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Maddox Gallery Gstaad and London, and Jonathan Levine Projects in New York.
